IUPALS - Italian Universities for Palestinian Students
The University of Catania is joining a project called IUPALS - Italian Universities for Palestinian Students. This project is supported by a group of Italian universities and is for students from Palestine who want to come to Italy to study at university.
About the Project
The project offers "scholarships." Think of them like special awards or free services that Italian universities give to students from Palestine who live in Palestine. Thanks to these scholarships, these students can come to Italy and study at university. This project is a team effort with the Italian government and the Italian Consulate in Jerusalem. In total, there are about 140 of these scholarships available at different universities.
The project also includes a course to learn Italian language and culture. This course helps the Palestinian students get ready before they start their university studies in Italy. Some of the universities in the project work together to organize this course.
More About the Scholarships
There are about 140 scholarships in total, offered by the universities taking part. These scholarships will start from the school year 2025/2026 and will last for the whole time of study. Each scholarship is worth about 12,000 euros per year. Usually, this money or these services cover:
- The fees you pay to go to university.
- A place to live in Italy.
- Food.
- Health insurance.
- Other helpful things, like free or cheaper access to books and study materials, the chance to use gyms and join fun activities, cultural events, advice from teachers, emotional support, help to feel at home in Italy, and help with paperwork (like the documents to come to Italy) and Italian language and culture courses.
Language Courses
Before starting university, the students will take an Italian language course that lasts from 3 to 6 months. These courses will be held in Bethlehem and Ramallah, at some local schools and with the help of a foundation.
The teachers will be qualified, and the lessons will be both online (live) to make it easier, and with materials you can study when you have time. You will get books and other materials to help you learn.
At the end of the course, the students will take a test to see how well they have learned Italian. This test will be important in deciding who gets the scholarships.
The universities in the project will also offer more Italian language courses to help the students who need to improve their Italian after they arrive in Italy.
