Composite Materials for Additive Manufacturing

Referente: Prof Gianluca Cicala

This is an exciting traineeship opportunity for a motivated innovative individual to work on the development of novel composite materials for Additive Manufacturing. Concentrating on the Fused Deposition Modelling technology, the focus is to formulate novel polymeric based filaments with novel reinforcements and fillers. The filaments produced on aa extrusion pilot plant will be fully tested on the available printers and compared to industrial materials processed on the Fortus 400mc machine available in the laboratory. Some of the traineeship activities will be carried out at CNR (National Research Council) based in Catania under the Agreement between DICAR and CNR.

The traineeship student’s tasks will be:

  • Understand the FDM technology and the filament extrusion production;

  • Development of technical solutions to produce tailored filament formulations;

  • Implementation of technical solutions and running of all the experimental characterization on printed specimens;

  • Professional documentation of project outcome.
