Course Overview

The degree course in Sciences of Administration and Organisation offers a formative pathway that provides for the development of abilities in historical/political, statistical/economic, sociological and linguistic areas.

The degree course aims to form professional figures, able to work in public national and international administrations, and in those of private complex organisations. Such professionals, on the basis of the methods and abilities acquired, will be able to interpret, in the correct manner, changes and innovations in public and private administrations, starting from “political” notions, from the study of the organs of central, regional and local governments, and later exploring administrative and management aspects. These include correctness of action, evaluation of cost/benefit, results, etc. Graduates will be able to assist public institutions, private companies and those of the third sector in activities of planning and implementation of initiatives that aim to promote the economic, social and civil development of communities.

The course is especially relevant because of the employment opportunities it provides, and for the progression of careers in the police services, above all based on prior experience with the curriculum in Disciplines of Public Security, the conventions stipulated by the University of Catania on behalf of the ex-Faculty of Political Sciences (now the Department of Political and Social Sciences) with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Police Force (Carabinieri), the Guardia di Finanza and the Department of Prison Administration.

Educational Goals

The professional figure formed on the basis of the competences and abilities imparted by the degree course is able to contribute to the management of complex structures, both public and private, through their capacity to interpret changes and innovations in administrations, in public institutions, in private companies and in those of the third sector.

In particular, the skills associated with functions necessary in a context of employment may be outlined synthetically as follows:

  • capacity of planning and selection of the correct course of action;
  • capacity of evaluation of correctness of the action;
  • capacity to evaluate the cost/benefits of the action taken;
  • capacity to foresee and evaluate the results of the action taken.

Job Opportunities

Employment possibilities connected with the degree course relate to the technical-administrative profiles required in the state public administration (central and regional), in the regions, provinces and communes, as well as the related businesses and societies with public participation. In addition, the universities, health authorities, Chambers of Commerce, independent administrations, privatised businesses, social enterprises, charity organisations and associations of social development with partnership activities.

Moreover, among the employment possibilities of the degree course, the following figures (classified according to ISTAT criteria) should also be included:

  • Administrative secretaries and technicians of general affairs
  • Technicians in the organisation and management of productive factors
  • Technicians of public services for the concession of licenses
  • Technicians of public services for the issue of certificates and personal documents
