UNICORE 8.0 - Call for applications for 2 study grants and welcome services for refugee students

The general aim of the project named University Corridors for Refugees - UNICORE 8.0 (Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe 2026-28) is to promote the refugees’ right to higher education through university corridors from Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to Italy. The project is jointly promoted by a consortium:
- United nations High commissioner for refugees (UNHCR)
- Italian Ministry for foreign affairs and international cooperation (MAECI)
- Caritas Italiana
- Centro Astalli – JRS Jesuits service for refugees in Italy
- Diaconia Valdese
- Gandhi Charity
- Italian universities listed in the National cooperation agreement.
The University of Catania supports the project and offers two scholarships for students admitted to one of the master degree courses in:
- LM-17 R Physics
- LM-22 R Chemical Engineering for Industrial Sustainability
- LM-25 Automation Engineering and Control of Complex Systems
- LM-26 R Construction Management and Safety
- LM-28 Electrical Engineering for Sustainable Green Energy Transition
- LM-29 Electronic Engineering
- LM-27 Communications Engineering
- LM-62 R Global Politics and Euromediterranean Relations
- LM-69 R Agricultural Science and Technology
- LM-DATA Data Science
Application period: from 2 March 2026 to 17 April 2026
Requisiti di ammissione
Application is open only to candidates who meet the following requirements:
- Are residing in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe and have been recognized refugee status in these countries;
- Hold a qualification valid for admission to the chosen Second Cycle Degree Programme. The qualification must have been issued by a higher education institution accredited in the higher education system of the Country where the degree has been issued and must NOT have been obtained in the candidate's country of origin;
- Hold a qualification not being obtained before 2021 and by 31.07.2026;
- Have a GPA (Grade point average) of at least 3.0 corresponding to, at least, 24/30 – referred to the Italian System. For the conversion of the average to the Italian grading system it will be used the official conversion formula of the Italian Ministry of Education, as for Annex 1 of this call;
- Meet specific curricular requirements and, in accordance with the provisions established by Italian Ministerial Decree n. 270/2004, have an adequate educational background, for the program of interest, as further specified in each course information sheet provided in the Annexes;
- Not being previously registered in an academic study programme at University of Catania or at any other Italian university member of UNICORE consortium;
- Have an adequate English language knowledge (B2 level).
Procedura di ammissione
Applications can be sent from 2 March 2026 to 17 April 2026. Students are due to send applications, including all the documents listed above, through the UNICORE website, at https://universitycorridors.unhcr.it . Once the application has been submitted, a confirmation email to the mailbox indicated in the online form will be sent.
Students are allowed to apply for one second level degree programme offered by University of Catania and for only two universities among those participating in the UNICORE 8.0 project including University of Catania. This is a mandatory requirement: non-compliance with this clause will cause the immediate rejection of the application. Applications will not be accepted if they are incomplete and / or are sent without the required documents and / or are received after the deadline.
Calendario e sedi delle prove
The selection process will be performed in two steps:
- Step 1: assessment of CV and documents concerning foreign qualification
- Step 2: online interview
Interviews will be graded on a scale of 40 points and will be scheduled on-line.
