Abstract

HE-RA – Heritage Empowerment through Regional Alliances is an Innovation Hub dedicated to Cultural Heritage Technologies, aimed at strengthening research, innovation, and technology transfer capacities in Southern Italy. The project integrates and enhances the expertise developed within the PNRR ecosystems SAMOTHRACE and CHANGES, promoting a multidisciplinary approach that combines the humanities, digital technologies, engineering, materials science, and advanced diagnostics for the protection, conservation, and enhancement of cultural heritage.

HE-RA develops and integrates innovative solutions for the conservation, monitoring, and enhancement of cultural heritage through intelligent sensing systems, 3D digitization and modeling, tools for accessibility and cultural inclusion, advanced technologies for in situ and ex situ diagnostics, and solutions for sustainable cultural tourism. The Hub also promotes the testing and transfer of technologies to businesses, institutions, and sector stakeholders, contributing to the dissemination of innovative models for the management and enjoyment of cultural heritage.

Through collaboration among universities, research institutions, companies, and public administrations, HE-RA fosters the creation of an open and sustainable innovation ecosystem capable of generating new opportunities for economic, social, and cultural development across territories. The project also supports the growth of specialized skills and the valorization of research outcomes, facilitating the connection between the demand for and supply of innovation in the cultural heritage sector.

The University of Catania (UniCT) participates in the project by providing interdisciplinary scientific expertise and advanced research infrastructures in the fields of diagnostics, digital technologies, monitoring, and cultural heritage enhancement. UniCT contributes to the development and delivery of integrated services for dating, in situ and ex situ diagnostics, monitoring, and preventive conservation, supporting the testing of innovative solutions and the transfer of technology to businesses and institutions. Through research activities, specialized training, and the dissemination of results, the University also contributes to strengthening skills and promoting innovation within the cultural heritage sector.
