Abstract

The RE-FOOD project — "Circular Bioeconomy Innovations to Rethink Food Systems" — is a three-year initiative promoted under Mission 4, Component 2 of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), conceived as a strategic and operational evolution of the AGRITECH and ONFOODS Extended Partnerships and National Centres. RE-FOOD aims to bring to industrial maturity (TRL 7-8) a selected set of solutions already validated at laboratory and pilot scale, acting along four thematic directions: the circular valorization of agri-food by-products, the development of sustainable bio-based packaging, the adoption of digital technologies for the traceability and sustainability reporting of supply chains, and the production of innovative functional foods and ingredients.

The Di3A is involved in all three lines into which the project is organized, in line with the corresponding actions of the call: Research & Development (Action 1.1.2), the RE-FOOD (Tech) Innovation Hub (Action 1.1.3b) and the RE-FOOD (Edu) skills-strengthening line (Action 1.4.3). The Department's activities focus in particular on the agri-food supply chains of Southern Italy, with strong engagement of SMEs in Less Developed Regions.

Prof. Mario D'Amico is UniCT Principal Investigator for the RE-FOOD project. Within the Research & Development line, the Di3A leads the activities of the WP "Digital Platforms, Data and Metrics

for Traceability and Sustainability", dedicated to the experimental development of an integrated digital ecosystem supporting traceability, ESG reporting and the analysis of agri-food supply chains. Within the line dedicated to the RE-FOOD (Tech) Innovation Hub, the Department takes part in the WP "Digital platforms and services for quality, certification and sustainability" (RE-DATA), contributing to the strengthening of the Hub's digital infrastructure and to the development of advanced services supporting the economic-environmental assessment and the sustainability of agri-food supply chains. The activity is structured along the strengthening of infrastructural assets, the formalization of service packages integrated with the other Hub partners, and pathways of technical support, training and pilot testing with enterprises, aimed at validating the developed solutions in the field and fostering their adoption.
