Course Overview

With its classical and modern curricula, the BA in Literature gives students a solid grounding in the linguistic, philological, literary and historical fields. It also fosters the knowledge of at least one European language in addition to Italian and of the main computing tools. The perspective adopted in the course is one which, while promoting the mastery of essential notions, aims to give special focus to the ability to transfer the acquired skills to the various workplace contexts and productive sectors.

The classical curriculum offers an in-depth treatment of issues regarding the formation and transmission of classical culture and of the role of the classical heritage as the fundamental root of the European culture. The modern curriculum offers an in-depth treatment of issues regarding the emergence of modernity, seen as a process of transformation and updating of the values and knowledge of western civilization but also as an increasingly close dialogue between the western culture and other cultures.

The three-year curriculum focusses on diverse areas whose common basis is their belonging to the humanities. These include: the study of the ancient world; the history of Italian and European literatures; linguistic disciplines in their theoretical and historical dimensions; historiographical sciences; the studies on theatre and the performing arts; the cultural and environmental heritage; the visual arts in all their manifestations; geographical disciplines.

Educational Goals

The BA in Literature aims to give students a basic grounding in the linguistic, philological, literary and historical domains. It promotes the development of knowledge and analytical abilities to: organise and classify literary, historical or historico-artistic texts as well as artistic, musical, theatrical and cinematic artefacts and works; situate the texts, artefacts and works under study in the respective periods in which they have been produced, interpreting their contents and purposes; understand and evaluate Italian and foreign documents of different types and origins – even contemporary documents; devise communicative modes which are appropriate and effective in the various workplace contexts – public or private; apply the acquired skills by producing – in Italian or in a foreign language – texts suitable to the various workplace domains.
