Cultural Area and aims
The Department was founded in 1999 with the objective of promoting and coordinating research and teaching activities in the fields related to Civil and Environmental Engineering. It results from the merging of three former institutes, namely the Institute of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Management, the Institute of Construction Engineering and the Institute of Roads, Railroads and Airports. Today the Department includes five departmental divisions, namely Economics, Management and Valuation (Estimation) Engineering, Hydraulics and Environmental Sanitary Engineering, Road Infrastructures and Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, as well as four laboratories: Structural and Material Testing, Geotechnical Testing, Road Testing, Hydraulic Laboratory. More than 100 people among professors, researchers, technical and administrative staff, graduate, PhD students and post-doc scholars are part of the department. The Department aims to promote the integration between university education and research activities through the organization of Doctoral and Master Courses, the activation of Post Doctoral positions, the participation to strategic national and international research projects as well as the establishment of international cooperation agreements.
Teaching and research activities
The Department offers the following courses:
-
one first level degree course in Civil Engineering (undergraduate level, three years programme), that is equivalent to a bachelor's degree;
-
three second level degree courses (graduate level, two years programme) in Water and Transportation Engineering, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental and Territory Engineering;
-
two third level Ph.D. courses (graduate level) in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering and in Hydraulics, Environmental Sanitary and Transportation Infrastructures Engineering, respectively.
The courses are designed with the aim of progressively increasing the creativity and technical expertise, by developing the ability in solving complex, real-world problems, and in carrying out research activities, from the first to the final year.
In the development of these programs, several links with leading Universities throughout the world have been established, resulting in reciprocal academic visits and lectures.
These activities range from seminars to intensive advanced courses.
The laboratories are actively involved in research and teaching activities, as well as in providing scientific and technical support to the public and private sector. The main fields of research of the Department include: Mechanics of Soils, Materials and Structures, Computational Mechanics, Structural Design, Structural and Soil Dynamics, Mechanics of Masonry, Seismic Retrofitting and Protection Systems, Earthquake Engineering, Seismic Microzonation, Stabilization of Cavities and Slopes, Foundations, Retaining Structures, Road and bridge planning and design, Intersection Design, Road Traffic Safety, Coastal Protection, Harbours, Embankments , Landfills, Remediation of Contaminated Sites, Wastewater treatment plants , Water Resources Management, Design of Hydraulics Infrastructures, Hydrology.
