Medical and Surgical Sciences and advanced technologies
Specialists in anatomy, biology and genetics, pathology diagnosis, neurology, neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neuroradiology, forensic medicine, microbiology, hygiene and public health, medical statistics are involved in this department.
The Department delivers a comprehensive education and training portfolio, from undergraduate programmes in medicine and for allied health professions, to professional graduate training and research.
A multidisciplinary group focuses on identifying causes, patterns and trends in disease occurence. Research outcomes are informing clinical guidelines and national policy on the management of disases and provision of health and social care services. Moreover in department take place Integrated Cancer Registry, which now covers the provinces of Catania, Messina, Syracuse and Enna and the Laboratory of Environmental Hygiene and Food.
Didactic and research activities
Among the activities of the department is the 'organization of teaching three undergraduate courses: nursing, biomedical laboratory techniques, techniques neurophysiopathology. Also at the department medical doctors are trained in hygiene and public health, forensic medicine, pathology, neurology and neurosurgery. The doctoral research programs of departements include: Biology, Human Genetics, BioInformatics: Cellular and Molecular Bases of Phenotype and Oncology.
The research activities includes:
Prevention and treatment of the following diseases: Parkinson, multiple sclerosis, diseases of nervous system, neurodegenerative deseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy and sleep disorders.
Pediatric cancer, brain tumors, thyroid cancers, ocular tumors and soft tissue cancer. The purpose of his research is the “target terapy”.
High Throughput characterisation of the cellular and molecular bases of human phenotype and its pathologic modifications (due to genetic or epigenetic mutations) causing neoplastic or degenerative diseases.
The Forensic Medicine is directed to the acquisition of information useful for medical practice (ethic and law codes), and to apply medical knowledge to civil or criminal law cases. The research is focused, in particular, on the study of Forensic Pathology, Traumatology, and Forensic Toxicology.
The focus of a public health intervention is to prevent and manage diseases, injuries and other health conditions through surveillance of cases and the promotion of healthy behaviors, communities and environments.
