Cultural Area and Aims

The Department of Industrial Engineering (DII) of the University of Catania (Italy) includes professors and researchers from several disciplines related to the most important areas of design, power plants, advanced techniques and technologies for renewable energy, environmental controlling and monitoring, remote sensing and material sciences. In particular, courses of environmental applied physics, industrial applied physics , industrial bioengineering, industrial drawing, industrial plants, fluid machines, applied mechanics, metallurgy, chemical fundamentals for technologies, material science and manufacturing technology are delivered at the Department.

It is located in the main Campus of the University, named Cittadella. Staffs are made up of more than 60 people. It offers facilities for research, teaching, design ,consulting service and administrative work. Also, the Department includes a number of laboratories for heavy testing, thermal, mechanical and spectroscopic characterization of materials, analysis of air and noise pollution, simulation and optimization of manufacturing and service systems, informatics supplies and other lighter research activities such as solid modeling and environmental applied physics control. Several infrared scanners and environmental survey instrumentations are among the Department equipment.

Didactics and Research Activities

The Department offers one bachelor course (3 years) and a range of master courses (2 years), as well as PhD programs. Recently, a 2-year Laurea Magistrale “Chemical Engineering for Industrial Sustainability” has been added. Technology and know-how, concerning advanced techniques and technologies for power plants design (CCHP,CHP, Photovoltaic, Thermodynamic Solar Power, Biomasses etc.etc.), for the acquisition of environmental or polluting data from aircraft, naval craft, and fixed platforms, for reaching energetic efficiency of industrial and civil compounds, production and behavior of new organic and polymeric composite materials, were acquired over the years as evidenced by many co-partnership with Public Authorities and International Companies. In addition, various applications, ranging from land/use-land/cover to water and air quality and oil pollution monitoring, were carried out. Also, new methodologies for design, preventive and predictive maintenance for industrial plants, mainly “aged” plants, were developed.

Research activites in the Department are also focused on operations management topics including production planning, Six Sigma for quality control, simulation and optimization of manufacturing and service processes.

Due to the multidisciplinary connotation of the Department, a number of other significant research activities have been undertaken and many other are currently under development. All of them are related to the topics of the courses delivered at the Department.
Finally, the Department has established a number of cooperation agreements with Universities and Research Institutions nationwide and internationally.
