Cultural area and aims
The Department of Agricultural and Food Science (DISPA) of the University of Catania was established in the year 2010 and originated from 2 of the 5 Departments of the former Faculty of Agriculture.
The mission of the DISPA, which is composed by 52 academic staff, is the pursuit of the improvement of the formation and of the research in agriculture, food production and sustainability and environment in the Mediterranean basin and educate future professionals who will enhance the knowledge and dissemination in those fields and will serve the needs of the society.
The DISPA is partially located in Via Valdisavoia (the historical building of the Faculty of Agriculture) and partially located in the modern campus of Via S. Sofia.
Didactics and research activities
The Academic staff of the Department held courses at Doctoral, Master and Bachelor level. The DISPA participated to the Erasmus Project and to the Erasmus Mundus project (both at Master and at PhD level) .
The Department has several facilities and laboratories to sustain the research and teaching activities. The Department of Agricultural and Food Science carries out researches in the fields of Agronomy and Agroecosystem Management, Food Crops, non Food Crops, Plant Biotechnology, Agricultural Chemistry, Food Technologies, Animal Biotechnology, Animal Production, and Phytopathology.
The Department boasts a number of laboratories including Molecular Biology and Biotechnology , Mass Spectrometry, Micropropagation, Ecophysiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food Tecnology and Sensory Evaluation.
The Academic and research staff of the Department attracts public funding from regional, national and international bodies. Moreover the active relationship with the rural and industrial world is testified by the numerous contracts with national and international enterprises.
