Personal Data
Prof. Giacomo Pignataro was born in Caltagirone on 23rd February 1963, full professor of Public Finance
 

He graduated in Business and Economics in 1986. He earned a Master Degree in Economics and, subsequently, a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of York, England (UK). Since 2002 he has been Full Professor of Public Finance. Since 13th March 2013 he is the new Rector Magnificus of the University of Catania.

Other activities
He was member of the Academic Board of University of Catania from 2005 to 2012. From February 2009 to December 2010 he was President of the Scuola Superiore di Catania. He is member of the Accounting Standards Board of the Ministry of Economy. He has participated in the working group of the Ministry for Education, University and Research, on Universities’ accounting principles. He has been appointed by the Minister of Health in the Ministerial Project Strategic Committee for the definition of a new system of evaluation and valorisation of hospital and healthcare activities.

Professional and Scientific Profile
His scientific interests cover a wide range of issues, from economic evaluation to regulation of monopolies, from cultural heritage to efficiency and effectiveness of public spending in the execution of public works. Nevertheless, his research and teaching interest has been focused mainly on the field of health economics, with particular reference to health care expenditures. In this area, he was, and he is still responsible for national, regional and international projects. He gave his contribution to start the first Italian doctoral programme in Health Economics, and he was coordinator of the Ph.D. in Public Economics. He has developed professional skills linked to his scientific activity, also in non academic environments, in collaboration with national and international institutions.
