Internet and access to wireless

1) General presentation

Garr - the Italian Network for the University and Research

The infrastructure of Garr-G network (Garr-Giganet) plans and operates the national high-speed telecommunication network for University and Scientific Research, and is operational since the end of 2003.

The GARR-G backbone is based on high-bandwidth circuits up to 10 Gbps. The meshed topology, interconnecting more than 50 Pop (Points of Presence) ensures a high level of resilience and reliability of the network; thanks also to its wide coverage of the country, it interconnects more than 400 user organizations all over the national territory.

Garr-G backbone Topology
The Garr network’s broadband access and advanced features fully supports innovative applications such as  Grids, Telemedicine, e-Learning, Multimedia, High Energy Physics, Radio Astronomy, Earth Observation, Supercomputing, and offers advanced network services such as VPN (Virtual Private Network), Multicast and Ipv6.

The Garr network has become an integral part of the worldwide system of Research Networks and collaborates with the main organizations that operate in the field of networking such as DANTE, TERENA, Internet 2, IETF. It connects to other NRENs in Europe and worldwide through a 10 Gbps link to the GÉANT2 pan-European backbone and to commercial Internet with multiple connections to 2.5 Gbps and to Gbps.

The Garr network has subscribed peering agreements with the main Italian commercial networks present in the major national interchange points: MIX (Milan), NAMEX (Rome), TOPIX (Turin), TIX (Florence), VSIX (Padua). Moreover, the network is connected  to the central public administration (Public System of Connectivity) and local (Peering with regional networks of Piemonte, Veneto, Emilia- Romagna, Toscana, Marche e Basilicata)
In 2010 the existing infrastructure will be progressively replaced by GARR-X, the next-generation multi-service network that will further enhance global performances and enable new advanced services.
The GARR –X has been projected to be flexible, as well as economically and technologically scalable. It will allow the provision of 10 Gbps on-demand circuits and services within the GARR community, guaranteeing better services and enhancing the global level of performances in the next years.

GARR-G User community
The GARR network and its services are dedicated to the Italian Research, Academic and Education communities. Currently the GARR network connects approximately 450 end sites, including research centres, laboratories and other facilities, universities, Institutes for Research in Health Care (IRCCS), Music Conservatories and Academies of Art (AFAM), Libraries, Archives, Schools, Museums and other R&E institutions of national relevance, for overall 2 million of end users:

  • 129 Laboratories and Research centres of major Scientific organizations in Italy, including CNR, ENEA, INGV, INFN and ASI;

  • 88 Universities;

  • 38 Institutes for Research in Health Care (IRCCS);

  • 26 National and University libraries;

  • 17 Astronomical and astrophysical observatories;

  • 74 other Research and Education facilities of national and international interest.

GARR network services
GARR provides to its user community both operational and application services; the former ones are closely connected to the management and evolution of the network, while the latter are oriented to end users. Operational services include configuration and management of network equipments, management of network failures, prevention and response to security incidents, domain names registration, allocation of IP (v4 and 6) addresses, etc. Further service are: Certification Authority, support to user mobility (Eduroam), and Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI). The following application services are available: multi-videoconferencing service (Vconf), News distribution and Mirror service. A special attention is dedicated to multimedia activities support, e-Learning, and VoIP, as well as distributed computing activities, such as those based on the Grid paradigm. GARR implements end-to-end dedicated connections to support specific project, both in its network and in international environment.

2. Configuration Instructions

Wireless internet access for the students

Wireless domain services are provided in classrooms, libraries and open spaces where students can have access. By activating wireless access points and using broadband network provided by the university, all services will be easily usable meanwhile new services will be implemented in the future. The projected platform allows a multi-device fruition.

The access to the network will be subjected to an on-line enrolment process through which students could have access using the same credentials to access to Students Portal  (I.D. and Pin).

The wireless domains are set up in order to guarantee the mobility of network users inside those structures where the service is currently active.

The service is active within 24 hours after the enrolment process.

Instructions for the activation and the configuration of the service:

1. Configuration instruction to Swan Access

Microsoft Windows XP

Certificate Installation

1) To download “ipsCaGlobal.crt” certificate from url.
http://www.ucst.unict.it/certificate/ipsCaGlobal.crt and place it on the desktop, if instead the certificate installation is automatically executed, move to step 3:

2) Once the certificate is downloaded, double click on it;

3) Click on “install certificate” and select “go ahead”  all the time is required, and then click on “end”, wait until the message “importation completed” appears, and click on “OK”;

4) Close the windows “Certificate”, and press  the “OK” button.

2. Configuration of the wireless network file

Accede to “Control Panel” and open “Network connections”.

Identify the wireless network file to be used. With the right key of the mouse, click on the network icon containing the file you want to access and select “Properties” from the menu.

The Windows Wireless Network Connection will appear.

Double click on “Internet Protocol” (TCP/IP) and an image will be displayed.

Make sure both “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain a DNS server address automatically” are checked. Click on “OK”.

In the "Wireless Connection Properties" window, select the "Wireless Networks" tab.

Click on “Add”. A window will appear.

Select the  “SSID network name” of the wireless network and insert “WLUCTSTUD”.

Select, in the same window, WPA for  “Network Authentication” and TKIP  for “Data Encryption”.

Select the “Authentication” tab.

On the field “EAP type” select “EAP Protected (PEAP)”. The following options must be unselected:  “Authenticate as computer when computer information is available” and “Authenticate as guest when …”

Press the “Properties” button. A window will appear. Uncheck the option “Validate server certificate”.

Under “Authentication method”, select the option Secured Password (EAP – MSCHAP v2) and press the button “Configure”. A window will appear.

Uncheck the option “Use automatically the access name …”

Press the OK button in all open windows (4 times). Now the set-up is complete. Click on OK and the connection is established automatically.

Click on the image at the lower right corner, that represents the connection.

Then enter your user credentials, such as the user name and the password.

Then leave the Logon Domain field empty and click on OK.

NB: For the students of the University it is important to insert as user name their own series of letters and numbers which refer to their fiscal position in capital letters and as password their own PIN number (already used to have access to Students Portal).
Wait about ten seconds to be connected to the network.

3. Wireless Service Activation (SWAN)

Procedure from Students’ Portal

Step 1 – Authentication
Insert the series of letters and numbers which refer to their fiscal position in capital letters and the  PIN number to have access to any Services.

Step 2 – Select the tab
From the left menu, select the “Students Wireless” Tab.

Step 3 - Wireless Acceptable Use Policy
To proceed with the activation of the service both University regulations and GARR Acceptable Use Policy must be accepted by pressing the OK button.

Step 4 – Activation Confirmation
Once the service activation is confirmed, proceed with the login, entering the same credentials used to have access to the Students’ Portal.
